In the Field
The process of capturing a great landscape photograph begins well before venturing out with my equipment. Firstly it is essential for any field photographer to be perfectly comfortable and familiar with their equipment, its capabilities and limitations. I must know how my cameras and film see, and be able to visualise this way myself in order to anticipate how a scene will appear on film.
Before venturing out I will try to learn as much about a location as possible from the resources available to me. I will often check tide and weather forecasts and cloud conditions in an attempt to anticipate favourable conditions.
The process of composing an artistic photograph involves carefully studying a location in its entirety whilst searching for the intimate details within the grand vista. I examine the interaction of forms, lines, textures and colours. I explore any sense of time, life, events, history, meaning and mood. If time allows I will explore the location at different times of the day, studying the effects of variations in light and weather. I will often photograph a scene many times before I am satisfied with what I have captured.
